ITIN Business Loans
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) lets you file U.S. taxes without a Social Security number. Many business owners use one. ITIN holders are not eligible for SBA loans under the 2026 citizenship rule, but some lenders do make business loans using an ITIN.
Who lends with an ITIN
- CDFIs (Community Development Financial Institutions): many serve immigrant entrepreneurs and accept an ITIN. Read what a CDFI is.
- Some credit unions, especially those focused on Hispanic communities. See credit union business loans.
- Community loan funds and nonprofit microlenders that are not using SBA Microloan funds.
- Some equipment finance companies, where the equipment secures the loan.
What lenders will ask for
- ITIN letter from the IRS and a valid photo ID (passport or consular ID).
- Personal and business tax returns filed with your ITIN, usually two years.
- Business bank statements.
- Proof of address and of the business (licenses, registration, lease).
- A simple business plan or explanation of how you will use the money.
Lenders often start with smaller amounts and increase them as you repay.
Building credit with an ITIN
You can build a U.S. credit file with an ITIN. Options include secured credit cards from banks that accept ITINs, credit-builder loans from credit unions and CDFIs, and reporting rent payments. See building credit as an immigrant.
Avoid these scams
- Anyone selling “SBA loans for ITIN holders”: SBA loans are not available to ITIN-only owners in 2026.
- Upfront “processing” or “insurance” fees before a loan is approved.
- Pressure to sign documents you cannot read. You can ask for a Spanish copy or bring someone you trust.
