SBA Express is a version of the 7(a) loan built for speed. Lenders with Express authority can approve your loan using their own procedures and get a quick answer from the SBA, instead of sending a full file for review. The trade-off: a lower maximum and a smaller government guarantee for the bank.
The key facts
- Maximum loan: $500,000.
- Uses: the same as a regular 7(a): working capital, equipment, inventory, refinancing, buying a business.
- Revolving lines of credit are allowed, which makes Express popular for businesses with seasonal cash needs.
- Guarantee: the SBA guarantees 50% of an Express loan, compared with up to 75–85% on a standard 7(a). Because the bank carries more risk, some lenders are stricter on credit.
What changed in October 2026
Under the SBA’s latest rule book (SOP 50 10 8.1, effective October 1, 2026), Express loans must follow the same rules as standard 7(a) loans on change of ownership, owner equity injection and debt-service coverage. Before, Express lenders could use their own policies on these points. In practice, an Express loan is now faster mostly in the process, not in easier rules.
When Express makes sense
- You need $500,000 or less.
- You have two or more years in business, solid credit and clean financials.
- You want a line of credit backed by the SBA.
- Timing matters, like a seasonal inventory purchase or an equipment deal that will not wait.
When to choose a standard 7(a) instead
- You need more than $500,000.
- Your file has a few weak spots (a short history, thin collateral). The larger guarantee on a standard 7(a) can make a bank more flexible.
- You are a startup. Many lenders prefer the standard program for new businesses.
